A gold IRA purchase minimum is a provider’s entry requirement, not an IRS contribution limit or a measure of the investment’s suitability. Ask what the minimum covers: the metal order, account funding or a promotional threshold. Then request the fees separately. A lower starting amount does not establish a lower total cost.
Two published minimums to compare
These figures come from the companies’ own pages, checked October 22, 2026. Confirm the current requirement for your proposed transaction in writing. They are published examples, not a market-wide minimum or an assessment of service quality.
| Company | IRA purchase | Direct purchase | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Augusta Precious Metals | $50,000 | $50,000 | Augusta FAQ |
| GoldenCrest Metals | $25,000 | $10,000 | GoldenCrest fees and minimums |
Augusta describes its threshold as an initial metal purchase, available through a combination of eligible products. GoldenCrest publishes separate IRA and direct-purchase figures. Neither number answers what your particular products will cost or what you could receive on resale. Our Augusta profile and GoldenCrest profile identify further questions about their terms.
These are featured commercial partners, and we may earn compensation when you contact or transact with them. For the wider company list, use our ten-company directory and obtain each provider’s current minimum directly.
Separate four different numbers
- Purchase minimum: the smallest order the dealer accepts. Ask whether it applies to the initial order, later orders, each metal or the combined order.
- Account funding requirement: cash the custodian needs before processing a purchase, including any required balance for charges.
- Promotional threshold: the amount and other conditions needed to qualify for a fee waiver or additional metal. It may be higher than the ordinary minimum.
- Annual contribution limit: a tax rule governing new IRA contributions, separate from a seller’s commercial terms.
A quote should state which number it is showing. If a salesperson says “you need $25,000,” ask whether that buys $25,000 of quoted products, includes charges deducted before purchase, or merely opens the account.
Why a $50,000 minimum does not permit a $50,000 annual contribution
The IRS contribution-limit page states that total regular contributions to traditional and Roth IRAs for 2026 generally cannot exceed $7,500, or $8,600 for someone age 50 or older, and cannot exceed taxable compensation if that is lower. Additional eligibility and Roth income rules can apply. Opening another IRA does not create another annual allowance.
The same IRS page distinguishes rollover contributions from that annual limit. That does not mean every retirement balance can be moved, or every movement is tax-free. Have the current institution and receiving custodian explain whether a transfer, rollover or conversion is involved and what rules apply. Do not arrange a distribution to yourself solely to satisfy a dealer’s minimum. Our custodian checklist separates the responsibilities and documents.
Test how fixed charges affect a smaller balance
For arithmetic only, suppose combined annual account and storage charges are a fixed $300. This is an invented example, not a quoted fee or industry average:
- $300 ÷ $10,000 = 3% of the starting amount per year.
- $300 ÷ $25,000 = 1.2%.
- $300 ÷ $50,000 = 0.6%.
This isolates one expense; it excludes purchase premiums, sale-price changes, setup and exit charges, taxes and changing account values. It does not recommend increasing the investment to reduce the percentage. Use the actual fee formula for your proposed account, including percentage-based fees or minimum charges, in our written-quote fee comparison.
The written answer to request before funding
Ask each business to provide the product and quantity, initial and additional-purchase minimums, total invoice price, account charges, promotion conditions and payment instructions. Confirm whether a mixed gold-and-silver order satisfies the threshold. Ask what happens to unspent cash and how recurring fees are paid.
Also obtain a current buyback quote for the same products. The CFTC and FINRA metals checklist emphasizes written prices, costs and resale terms. A small minimum can still accompany an expensive purchase-to-resale gap.
If a provider’s minimum exceeds the amount you have decided to commit, do not let the threshold make the allocation decision for you. Revisit the purpose, account structure and full cost using our gold IRA decision worksheet. Meeting a minimum does not establish that a physical-metals IRA is appropriate for your circumstances.
