A gold IRA comparison should answer who sells the metal, who administers the account, where the metal is held and what the full transaction costs. The company with the most visible advertisement is not necessarily the custodian.
Our featured providers
Augusta Precious Metals, American Hartford Gold, Goldco, GoldenCrest Metals and Lear Capital receive prominent placement because we have commercial arrangements. We may earn compensation through their links. This is not a score based on independently verified customer ratings or investment performance.
Our ten-company directory also includes Advantage Gold, Birch Gold Group, Noble Gold Investments, Preserve Gold and Priority Gold. Start with the profiles, then obtain current documents directly. We do not assume an advertised minimum, fee waiver or buyback offer applies to every customer.
For a specific example, read our Augusta review covering its purchase minimum, published fees and service, then use the account-setup checklist to prepare questions and documents.
Also see our GoldenCrest Metals profile for its published purchase minimums and questions about promotional terms. Compare the complete written quote, including costs after any offer ends.
Check our gold IRA minimum-investment guide to separate published purchase thresholds, account fees and annual contribution limits before comparing offers.
The quote request to send
“Please quote the exact metal products and quantities, the full purchase price, all account and storage fees, and your current price to buy back those same items. Please identify the custodian and storage provider and state which charges apply after any promotion ends.”
Use the same requested products and account value for every company. Save each dated response. The CFTC and FINRA: questions before buying precious metals advises buyers to obtain costs in writing and compare purchase and resale prices.
What the numbers tell you
- Purchase premium: how much you pay above the reference metal value.
- Immediate resale gap: purchase cost minus the dealer’s current buyback quote.
- Recurring cost: account and storage charges over your intended holding period.
- Exit cost: sale, transfer, closure or delivery charges that apply when you leave.
A statement that a company “offers buyback” does not establish a guaranteed price or contractual obligation to buy. Read the agreement and ask what can change.
Account checks before funding
Start with the gold IRA cost and suitability worksheet, then use the custodian document checklist to separate the dealer, account administrator and storage provider.
Before paying, use our gold investment scams checklist to verify the seller, check custody claims and recognize pressure tactics. It also explains what to do if you have already paid a suspected scammer.
Confirm the exact product’s eligibility and custody arrangement with the receiving custodian. Decide separately whether a rollover is appropriate and whether the account should be traditional or Roth. The SEC investor alert: self-directed IRA risks explains why having a custodian is not a guarantee that the investment is suitable or legitimate.
Use our account-type explanation before treating “gold IRA” and “traditional IRA” as different tax categories.

Check costs before contacting a provider
Use written quotes and explicit assumptions to make the next comparison; no worksheet guarantees an investment outcome.
- Gold IRA Fee Comparison: Use Your Written Quotes — Enter the charges in dated written quotes rather than assuming a provider has no fee.
- How Much Gold Should I Own? A Decision and Risk Worksheet — Review allocation assumptions separately from the provider shortlist.
