Gold may fit some investment plans, but the answer depends on the purpose, price paid, account and holding period. It is not a guaranteed inflation hedge, a source of recurring income or a substitute for a cash reserve.
Define the job before the allocation
Write down what you expect gold to do: provide physical ownership, diversify a portfolio or express a market view. Then ask how you would judge success and what would make you change the position. Without that rule, a price headline can become the entire investment strategy.
Compare the return you can actually receive
A chart of spot gold excludes the retail premium, resale spread, storage, account fees and taxes on your particular investment. Request the purchase and buyback prices for physical products. For an exchange-traded product, use its prospectus and expenses. The CFTC and FINRA: questions before buying precious metals provides a starting checklist for physical purchases.
Illustration: if you buy an asset for $5,000 and could immediately sell it for $4,700, the $300 gap equals 6% of your purchase cost. That gap must be considered before any holding costs or tax. It is an example, not a market quote.
Test uncomfortable outcomes
- Could you leave the investment untouched after a meaningful price decline?
- Would it force you to sell something else to meet bills?
- Could costs outweigh a modest price increase?
- Does the position duplicate exposure you already have?
Physical gold pays no interest or dividends. Mining shares can pay dividends, but they also introduce operating and financing risks. A gold-related fund’s behavior depends on its holdings and structure.
Do historical comparisons carefully
Use consistent dates, currency, inflation treatment, transaction costs and reinvestment assumptions. A comparison of gold prices with a stock price index that excludes dividends can be misleading. A favorable backtest does not establish an optimal allocation for your future.
Read the investment-method guide before selecting a product, and the retirement checklist if you expect the money to support future spending.
