The lowest displayed gold price is not necessarily the lowest total quote. Compare the same product and quantity at a similar time, including payment charges, shipping and any applicable tax.
No live price feed: this guide explains how to compare a quote you obtain. It does not publish today’s market price. Example prices are hypothetical.
Start with a timestamped reference
A price record needs a source, timestamp, currency and unit. The LBMA benchmark explanation describes a twice-daily USD-per-troy-ounce gold benchmark and delayed public publication. An earlier benchmark can be useful context, but it is not a current retail offer.
Save a dealer quote’s validity period. If you collect the second quote after the first expires, recheck the first before declaring a winner. This separates a change in the market from a difference in the dealer’s charges.
Work through two complete offers
Suppose both offers below cover exactly one identical coin containing one fine troy ounce. The assumed reference is $3,000. All values are invented; no current dealer price or tax rate is implied.
| Cost | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Product price | $3,090 | $3,075 |
| Shipping | $25 | $45 |
| Payment charge | $0 | $20 |
| Tax assumed for this example | $0 | $0 |
| Total | $3,115 | $3,140 |
| Amount above metal reference | $115 / 3.83% | $140 / 4.67% |
Offer B advertises a product price $15 lower, but its complete cost is $25 higher. The percentages divide each total’s excess over the $3,000 reference by $3,000. They are all-in differences, not product-only premiums. Use the tax and delivery actually applicable to your order.
Keep a resale comparison alongside the purchase
A future sale price is unknown. A same-time bid is still useful for understanding the purchase-to-sale gap under current quoted terms. Record the named product, quantity, bid expiry, deductions and settlement conditions.
The CFTC’s advisory explains why the dealer spread and other charges matter. A benchmark increase does not automatically cover all purchase, holding and sale costs.
Use the right comparison for an IRA
The invoice comparison above addresses the metal purchase. An IRA can also have administration, storage and exit costs. Keep those separate in the IRA fee worksheet rather than disguising them as part of a spot price.
For weight conversions, use our gold-per-gram calculator. It works from your own inputs, and its metal value is neither a dealer offer nor an account valuation.
What to save before making a choice
Keep both complete quotes, the product specifications and the relevant purchase agreements. Mark unanswered fields as unknown. A comparison is incomplete if a dealer omits a material charge or substitutes a different product.
