A gold IRA can be a traditional IRA. “Gold” describes the investment arrangement, while “traditional” describes tax treatment. The useful comparison is between the actual account types, assets and services available to you.
Account type and investment choice
A traditional IRA may hold investments offered by its custodian. A self-directed custodian may permit eligible physical metals, while a brokerage custodian may offer gold-related securities instead. A Roth IRA is another tax arrangement, with different contribution and distribution rules.
The IRS: IRA investment and custody rules confirms that trustees may restrict the assets they administer. Permission under tax law does not require every custodian to offer an investment.
What physical metal adds
- A dealer’s purchase and resale pricing.
- A custody and storage arrangement for the specific eligible products.
- Potential storage, account, shipping and transaction charges.
- Processes for valuation, sale and distributions.
Get all these terms in writing. The custodian, dealer and storage company may be separate legal entities with separate agreements.
What remains an IRA tax question
Traditional IRA withdrawals are generally taxable, except for amounts such as after-tax basis that change the calculation. Qualified Roth distributions have different treatment. Required distributions and early-withdrawal rules depend on account and personal circumstances; holding bullion does not provide a separate exemption. See IRS Publication 590-B: IRA distributions.
A transfer between compatible accounts differs from converting pretax funds to a Roth account. Check the tax consequences before signing a rollover instruction, especially when an existing account mixes pretax and after-tax money.
How to compare two proposals
Use the same balance and holding period, then compare total costs, product risks, withdrawal arrangements and services. Include an existing employer plan among the alternatives where available. Gold can lose value and does not itself generate income to pay account expenses.
