Disadvantages Of Investing In Gold: Complete Guide for 2026

Disadvantages of Investing in Gold: Risks and Costs by Ownership Type

Last updated: October 22, 2026

The main disadvantages of gold are price uncertainty, the absence of income from the metal itself, purchase and exit costs, and the practical risks of the ownership method. Holding coins, a stored-gold account or an exchange-traded product creates different tasks and expenses. A retirement-account wrapper does not remove the underlying market risk.

Start with what you need the investment to do. If you need predictable spending money, rapid access to cash or a return tied to business earnings, identify how the proposed gold holding would meet that need before comparing sellers.

Gold itself does not pay income

New Zealand’s Financial Markets Authority explains that direct commodity holdings do not pay interest or dividends. A profit depends on selling for more than the purchase and associated costs. This is a characteristic of the metal, not a statement that every business or financial product associated with gold has identical cash flows.

For your own comparison, write down where spending money and holding costs would come from if you did not sell any gold. Then ask what happens if you need that money during a price decline. A holding that can be retained indefinitely and one that must fund a bill next year serve different needs.

A safe-haven description is not a price guarantee

The CFTC’s precious-metals warning highlights volatility and fraud, including pitches based on easy profits or economic-collapse fears. Do not turn a diversification argument into an assumption that gold must rise whenever another investment falls.

Consider a downside scenario before choosing an amount. If the holding fell in value, would you have to sell it, borrow or change essential spending? Use a loss amount you can understand in dollars. This exercise tests affordability; it does not predict the next price move or establish a universally suitable portfolio percentage.

Different ownership forms have different drawbacks

Form Issue to investigate Document or check
Coins or bars in your possession Authentication, theft or loss, security and the sale process. Itemized invoice, insurance terms and a realistic buyer’s quote.
Gold held by a storage provider Your ownership rights, provider dependence, recurring charges and access. Custody agreement, holdings record, fee schedule and withdrawal terms.
Exchange-traded gold exposure What the product actually owns, its legal structure, expenses and trading terms. Prospectus, current holdings and broker information.
Physical precious metals inside an IRA Account administration and custody requirements alongside metal costs and risks. Custodial agreement, account charges and tax advice for the planned transaction.

The SEC distinguishes ETFs, commodity trusts and exchange-traded notes. An exchange-traded commodity trust is not necessarily registered under the same investment-company framework as an ETF, even when people call it an ETF. Read the specific product documents rather than relying on its label. Our gold ETF versus physical gold guide develops that comparison.

The market price is not your sale proceeds

Obtain both a complete purchase quote and a current bid for the same item. Record any delivery, storage, account and exit charges separately. The CFTC and FINRA metals checklist recommends asking about written prices, costs and buyback terms.

Illustration only: a purchase costs $10,000, holding and exit expenses total $200, and the eventual sale pays $9,400. Cash received is $800 below total cash spent, before taxes. The result depends on the actual sale quote and costs; a chart of the gold price does not contain those personal transaction details.

Ask what a buyer needs before making a firm offer, including product inspection and documentation, and when payment would arrive. Avoid treating an estimated account value or a promise to consider buying as an executable bid. For stored metal, our ownership and contract checklist covers the records and exit terms to request.

Tax treatment and account rules need a separate check

U.S. tax treatment depends on the asset, account and circumstances. The IRS capital-gains guidance states that net long-term capital gains from collectibles such as coins can be subject to a maximum 28% rate. That is not a flat rate for every investor or a complete description of every gold-related product’s taxes.

An IRA introduces its own rules and charges; it should not be presented as a cure for price losses, spreads or illiquidity. For that separate decision, use our gold IRA worth-it checklist and confirm the proposed arrangement with an independent tax adviser.

Use the disadvantages to test the purchase

Before proceeding, write down the purpose, amount, time horizon, total costs, access process and circumstances in which you would sell. Mark missing information explicitly. Compare the proposed holding with your actual needs and other investments, rather than assuming that a “gold” label determines its suitability.
